Craig Kurumada

Craig has been playing Thracian, Macedonian and Rhodope gajda for thirty years. He has performed with the Zivio Ethnic Arts Ensemble of Salt Lake City and is co-founder of the Arcata, California band, "Chubritza". He counts among his teachers Mark Levy, George Chittenden, Georgi Doichev and the late, great Vassil Bebelekov. As part of his honoring Vassil's memory, he has made a mission to get good, functioning gaidi into the hands of those who want to learn.

He is very excited to attend his first time at Lark in the Morning Camp where he will be leading the Bulgarian Tunes for All Instruments and Bulgarian Ensemble.

Bulgarian Tunes For All Instruments
Includes both village and city tunes. We will cover a variety of Bulgarian rhythms and melodic treatment. We will learn by ear and use charts. We will play popular as well as more obscure folk tunes from different parts of Bulgaria and will try to work with the Balkan Singing class.

Bulgarian Ensemble
Focusing on dance tunes for the traditional instruments: gaida, gadulka, kaval, tambura and tupan, but all instruments are welcome. We will work on tunes and build ensembles with the goal to play for dancers.
